Mecum’s Indy 2026 Auction: A Showcase of Rare American Muscle Cars
Mecum Auctions is set to host its highly anticipated Indy 2026 sale from May 8 to 16, 2026, offering an exceptional selection of vehicles spanning supercars, vintage SUVs, and pre-war classics. Among the standout offerings are classic American performance cars, including some of the most sought-after muscle cars in automotive history.
For collectors seeking turnkey opportunities, many of these classics are sold as single lots, simplifying the purchasing process. Below, we highlight three standout American muscle cars from the Mecum Indy 2026 catalog that are sure to turn heads.
1. 1965 Plymouth Belvedere I Super Stock Lightweight
Plymouth’s Belvedere was originally designed with families in mind, but the Lightweight Package transformed it into a formidable drag racer. This rare option, available in 1965, included a 426-cubic-inch Hemi V-8 producing 425 horsepower, a heavy-duty suspension, and other performance upgrades.
The example featured in the Mecum Indy 2026 catalog is one of just 11 units built with a four-speed manual transmission. Assigned chassis number R051191722, this Belvedere underwent a full restoration by Wisconsin-based Muscle Car Restorations. While its early history remains largely undocumented, it has been displayed at the Walter P. Chrysler Museum in Auburn Hills, Michigan, underscoring the quality of its restoration.
2. 1965 Shelby GT350R Fastback
One of only 34 units ever built, the 1965 Shelby GT350R was engineered for competition in the SCCA’s B-Production category. This particular example, with chassis number SFM5R106, was equipped with a Shelby-modified 289-cubic-inch V-8 rated at 325 horsepower—more power than today’s EcoBoost-powered Mustangs.
Its racing career began just 10 days after delivery to its first owner, competing at Road America and other Midwest tracks. After retiring from racing, the GT350R was stored until 1987, when its second owner commissioned a full restoration—save for a scratch on a door handle, preserved as a tribute to its racing legacy. Now offered with approximately 5,000 miles on the odometer, this GT350R retains its original 289-cubic-inch V-8 and rare Plexiglas windows installed by Shelby.
3. 1966 Shelby 427 Cobra Roadster
While Shelby Cobra replicas are common in the auction world, this 1966 Shelby 427 Cobra Roadster is the genuine article. One of about 155 units powered by the 427-cubic-inch V-8, and one of roughly 16 finished in black, this Cobra is a highly original and meticulously documented example.
Listed in the Shelby Registry, it retains its original body, chassis, V-8, Toploader four-speed manual transmission, and rear axle. Mecum describes it as a rare find for serious collectors seeking an untouched piece of automotive history.
