US Space Command has launched Apollo Insight, a new series of classified wargames designed to enhance preparedness for space-based threats. The initiative invites participation from commercial companies, marking a collaborative approach to addressing emerging challenges in the space domain.
The first exercise in the series simulated a nuclear detonation in orbit, a scenario intended to test response strategies and coordination among military and civilian stakeholders. Gen. Stephen Whiting, commander of US Space Command, discussed the program on Tuesday during an event hosted by the Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Studies.
Space Command, which oversees military activities in space, operates separately from the US Space Force. While the Space Force provides personnel and equipment to support Space Command’s missions, the latter focuses on strategic and operational planning in the space domain.
The Apollo Insight wargames aim to integrate military and commercial expertise to address simulated threats in space. According to Space Command, four tabletop exercises are planned for this year as part of the initiative.
