Congressman Suhas Subramanyam (D-Virginia) demanded the resignation of Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick on Friday, citing disproven claims about his past relationship with Jeffrey Epstein. Lutnick testified in a closed-door session before the House Oversight Committee earlier this month, where his previous statements were directly challenged.

During the hearing, Lutnick’s assertion that he had no further interactions with Epstein after 2005 was refuted by Justice Department documents released this month. The files revealed that Lutnick met with Epstein at least three additional times after that year.

Subramanyam, a member of the House Oversight Committee, criticized Lutnick’s testimony in an appearance on MS NOW on Thursday. He stated:

“It’s amazing that Republicans didn’t want to even videotape it. But now we know why. It’s because Lutnick was dishonest with us and evasive with us, once again, as he was with the American people.”

The congressman also shared details of his questioning of Lutnick during the hearing:

  • Subramanyam confronted Lutnick with photographic evidence showing the two together on Epstein’s island, despite Lutnick’s prior claims of no further meetings.
  • Lutnick reportedly responded by stating that his presence with his wife did not count as an interaction.
  • Subramanyam pressed Lutnick on why he traveled to Epstein’s island at all, to which Lutnick admitted he could not recall his reasons for the visit.

Subramanyam highlighted Lutnick’s contradictory statements, noting that while Lutnick called Epstein a “disgusting person,” he had brought his family to the island where numerous crimes, including sex trafficking, occurred. He concluded:

“He was dishonest to the American people. He should resign.”
