When ‘The Night Agent’ premiered on Netflix in March 2023, the Gabriel Basso-led action thriller quickly became the platform’s most-watched series, dominating weekly rankings for 17 consecutive weeks. The first season amassed 168.71 million hours viewed in its debut week, more than tripling the viewership of its nearest competitor, ‘Shadow and Bone’, which recorded 55.03 million hours.

Despite these record-breaking numbers, the show’s popularity began to wane by early 2025. Season 3, released in February 2025, underperformed, losing ground to Netflix’s ‘Top Model’ documentary and the new season of ‘Bridgerton’. While Netflix initially renewed the series for a fourth season, the company reversed course less than two months later, announcing that Season 4 would be the final installment.

Showrunner Shawn Ryan attributed the cancellation to a creative decision, stating in an official release:

‘Ever since the initial success of ‘The Night Agent,’ I’ve been obsessed with eventually delivering a proper and thrilling conclusion to the show and to Peter Sutherland’s journey.’

The decline in ratings reflects broader challenges in Netflix’s binge-model strategy. Long-running series like ‘The Night Agent’ struggle to maintain audience engagement as viewers increasingly favor shorter, more episodic content. Netflix’s shift away from foundational hits such as ‘Orange Is the New Black’ and ‘House of Cards’ signals a pivot toward titles with shorter lifespans, though exceptions like ‘Virgin River’ and ‘Bridgerton’ continue to thrive.

Despite its eventual ratings drop, ‘The Night Agent’ Season 1 remained in Netflix’s top 10 most popular English-language shows for months, only losing the No. 10 spot to the limited murder mystery series ‘His Hers’ in early 2025. Season 2, released in January 2025, still debuted as Netflix’s most-watched series with 13.9 million views in its first week, outperforming ‘XO, Kitty’ (9.2 million views) and retaining the top spot for six weeks.

While the cancellation marks the end of Peter Sutherland’s story, Netflix’s decision underscores the challenges of sustaining long-term engagement in an increasingly competitive streaming landscape.
