Posting links to X through custom social media software has become significantly more expensive. On Monday, the platform increased the cost of posting a URL via the X API—the interface third-party tools use to integrate with X—from $0.01 to $0.20 per link.

This 1,900% price hike is likely to further deter publishers from using the platform, particularly given widespread concerns that including links to news articles may reduce a post’s reach. The issue was recently highlighted in a public exchange between Nate Silver, founder of FiveThirtyEight, and Nikita Bier, X’s head of product, who denied claims that links are "deboosted."
