ABC has officially renewed two popular comedies, ‘Scrubs’ and ‘Shifting Gears’, for the 2026-27 television season, the network announced on Thursday.

The renewal ensures that the ‘Scrubs’ revival will proceed into its second season, while ‘Shifting Gears’ will enter its third installment.

Both series join ABC’s growing slate of renewed programs for the 2026-27 season, which includes:

  • ‘Abbott Elementary’ for Season 6
  • ‘High Potential’ for Season 3
  • ‘9-1-1’ for Season 10
  • ‘9-1-1: Nashville’ for Season 2
  • ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ for Season 23
  • ‘Will Trent’ for Season 5
  • ‘The Rookie’ for Season 9

Meanwhile, the new series ‘RJ Decker’ remains on-the-bubble and has not yet been confirmed for renewal.

Strong Ratings Drive Renewals

Both renewed comedies delivered impressive viewership this season. The premiere of the ‘Scrubs’ revival ranked as the highest-rated comedy telecast among adults 18-49 and garnered 11 million viewers across 35 days, according to Nielsen figures.

‘Shifting Gears’ also performed exceptionally well, ranking as ABC’s No. 1 comedy on linear television in total viewers. The Season 2 finale in February achieved its best audience across platforms since the fall premiere, based on Nielsen live-plus-seven-day figures.

Behind the Scenes of ‘Shifting Gears’

The ‘Shifting Gears’ finale concluded on a major cliffhanger, with the character Riley (Kat Dennings) forced to choose between Gabe (Seann William Scott) and Andy (Jesse Williams). Showrunner Michelle Nader revealed to TheWrap that this storyline represented a significant shift from the original plan, which intended for Riley and Andy to end their relationship.

“Jesse’s talent and their chemistry made us pivot,” Nader said. “I have no idea where this goes, which is the exciting part. I think that’s what’s exciting to the audience, too.”

The ABC series is produced by 20th Television, a division of Disney Television Studios. Executive producers for ‘Shifting Gears’ include Tim Allen, Marty Adelstein, Becky Clements, Richard Baker, Rick Messina, John Pasquin, Jim Patterson, Bob Daily, John Amodeo, and Kat Dennings, who also stars in the show.

‘Scrubs’ Revival Continues with Original Cast

‘Scrubs’, hailing from 20th Television, is executive produced by the show’s original creator Bill Lawrence, along with Jeff Ingold and Liza Katzer of Doozer Productions. Aseem Batra serves as executive producer and showrunner, while Randall Winston also executive produces. The revival stars and executive produces Zach Braff, Donald Faison, and Sarah Chalke.
