BMW’s strategic acquisition of Alpina has reached a pivotal milestone. The niche manufacturer of BMW-based sport luxury vehicles was purchased outright by BMW in March 2022 for a rumored €60 million. The integration process, including the coveted brand name, was officially completed on January 1, 2026.
Oliver Viellechner has been appointed vice president, while Alexander Innes serves as chief designer. The small team is led by Max Missoni, formerly of Polestar. The brand has already teased its new logo and released promotional videos, but the official launch phase begins at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este in northern Italy on May 15, 2026. This is where the wraps will come off the first Alpina concept car.
The Vision Concept: A Modern Interpretation of Alpina’s Legacy
The eye-catching two-door four-seater is built on the platform of the discontinued 8 Series Gran Coupé, featuring an 118-inch wheelbase and measuring 191 inches in length. While BMW produced limited runs of the 8 Series Skytop and Speedtop special editions, sources suggest the first new-generation Alpina is unlikely to progress beyond concept status due to the lack of a suitable donor vehicle.
Alpina has long been synonymous with sporty, lightweight, and powerful vehicles that often outperformed their BMW counterparts. Models like the B10, B12, B3, and B5 exemplify this legacy. Founder Burkhard Bovensiepen and his sons maintained a collaborative relationship with BMW’s M division, allowing both brands to thrive in their respective niches. The new coupe concept signals that this strategy continues under full BMW ownership.
Design Highlights: A Blend of Heritage and Innovation
The Vision Concept avoids excessive aero aids or garish styling, instead introducing several striking and potentially iconic elements:
- A more extreme shark nose paired with a concave full-width air dam
- A large backlit V-shaped body-color kidney grille
- Layered super-slim L-pattern taillights
- Reimagined 20-spoke alloy wheels
- Flared angular rocker panels
- A smaller jewel-style interpretation of the stacked headlamp theme seen on the 7 Series and X7
Interior Luxury: Craftsmanship Meets Modern Comfort
The cabin features wall-to-wall suede and trademark Lavalina leather, complemented by indirect ambient lighting. Classic Alpina blue and green accents reappear on the Vision’s digital speedometer and state-of-charge display. When the gear selector is shifted into Drive, the Alpina name and a snow-capped mountain pictogram briefly appear on the dashboard.
The roof and rear window are crafted from a single piece of gracefully curved sloping glass. Rear passengers enjoy a refrigerated center console with crystal goblets featuring magnetic bases designed to withstand g-forces.
“There is no bad seat in this car,” says Max Missoni, Alpina’s chief designer. “This message will be true to all of our products. Alpina offers space and style, comfort and convenience, class and craftsmanship with a twist. We honor tradition by reinventing.”
