Autonomous vehicles operating on California’s roads will no longer be exempt from traffic violations starting July 1, according to new regulations announced by the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).
The updated rules permit law enforcement to issue a "notice of AV noncompliance" to autonomous vehicle manufacturers when their vehicles commit traffic violations, including running a red light or failing to stop for school buses.
This regulatory change follows years of high-profile traffic violations and safety investigations involving robotaxis. Notably, Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) system is currently under investigation for incidents such as running red lights and driving in the wrong direction.
Under the new framework, AV manufacturers will be held accountable for their vehicles’ compliance with traffic laws, ensuring greater accountability on public roads.
