Seres Patents Innovative In-Car Toilet System

Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer Seres has secured a patent for a compact, slide-out toilet system designed to fit beneath car seats. The patent, first reported by Autoblog, was filed in April 2025 and approved last week.

The patented design features a rail system that allows a small toilet to slide out from under the seat like a drawer, remaining hidden when not in use. According to the patent filing, the system is intended to "satisfy users’ toilet needs on long journeys, while camping or while staying in the car."

Key Features of the In-Car Toilet System

  • Compact Design: The toilet slides out from beneath the seat and tucks away when not in use.
  • Automated Functionality: The system can be activated via a button or voice command.
  • Waste Management: Includes a fan, exhaust system, and a high-tech tank with a heating element to dry out waste.

Potential Market Appeal and Challenges

The concept, while unusual, could find traction in certain markets. In the U.S., in-vehicle toilets are rare outside specialized vehicles like Sprinter vans and Greyhound buses. However, the system might appeal to individuals with gastrointestinal disorders or those who frequently travel in areas with limited public restroom access.

In China, where automakers prioritize in-cabin luxury and functionality, the toilet system aligns with a trend of maximizing convenience. For example, Seres’ competitor Li Auto offers the Mega, a massive van featuring a wraparound screen, fold-flat bed-like seats, and a dual-purpose fridge. The Mega is marketed as providing "the spaciousness of a luxury apartment wherever you go."

Cultural and Practical Considerations

While U.S. #vanlife culture often emphasizes solo or small-group travel, Chinese road trips frequently involve families, making multi-functional vehicle features more appealing. The in-car toilet could address a practical need in regions where public restrooms are scarce or inconveniently located.

Seres’ Aito models, developed in partnership with Huawei, have gained significant popularity in China. Last year, Seres surpassed BMW and Mercedes to become the top luxury vehicle brand in the country by sales volume.

Will the In-Car Toilet Ever Hit the Market?

While the patent indicates a serious engineering effort, it remains unclear whether Seres—or any automaker—will bring this feature to production. Many patents never materialize into real-world products. However, given the growing demand for mobile living solutions in China, the idea may not be as far-fetched as it initially seems.
