Behind the Scenes: Filming and Production
True to Nolan’s signature style, ‘The Odyssey’ was shot exclusively using Imax film cameras, including a lighter, quieter version designed to reduce post-production looping. (Standard Imax cameras are notoriously loud.)
The production spanned from February to August 2023, with filming locations across Morocco, Greece, Italy, Iceland, Scotland, and the Universal backlot water tank.
The film reunites Nolan with several key collaborators:
- Hoyte van Hoytema (cinematographer)
- Andrew Jackson (visual-effects supervisor)
- Jennifer Lame (editor)
- Ludwig Göransson (composer)
Nolan wrote, directed, and produced ‘The Odyssey’, with Emma Thomas producing under their company, Syncopy. Thomas Hayslip served as executive producer.
Historical Adaptations of ‘The Odyssey’

- The 1981 French-Japanese animated series ‘Ulysses 31’
- A 1997 two-part television miniseries produced by Hallmark and Francis Ford Coppola’s American Zoetrope, featuring Armand Assante as Ulysses and mythic creatures from Jim Henson’s Creature Shop
