Amid pressing national and global challenges, U.S. Congress members are prioritizing a resolution to address the spread of antisemitic and hate-filled rhetoric online. The bipartisan effort targets prominent influencers, including Hasan Piker and Candace Owens, and urges social media platforms and public leaders to take stronger action against such content.

Resolution Introduced by Gottheimer and Lawler

On Wednesday, Democratic Representative Josh Gottheimer and Republican Representative Mike Lawler introduced a resolution condemning the rise of antisemitic rhetoric disseminated by online personalities. The resolution specifically calls out Piker and Owens for allegedly promoting hate speech.

"Piker has openly applauded Hamas’ terrorism, downplayed the mass rape of civilians on October 7th, and dehumanized Orthodox Jews as ‘inbred.’"
"Owens has trafficked in vile conspiracy theories, promoted blood libels, and platformed Holocaust deniers."

Lawler emphasized the responsibility of influencers with large followings to confront hatred rather than amplify it. He stated:

"With an audience of millions, they have a responsibility to confront hatred and bigotry in every form, not to amplify it to the masses. So if they won’t call it out, I will."

Gottheimer echoed the sentiment, stressing the importance of principled leadership:

"I get that speaking up is not easy. But our constituents didn’t elect us to always take the easy path. That’s what principled leadership is all about."

Background on Piker and Owens

Hasan Piker, a left-wing influencer with a large following on Twitch, has faced criticism from pro-Israel advocacy groups such as AIPAC and centrist organizations like Third Way for alleged antisemitic rhetoric in his anti-Zionist, pro-Palestinian advocacy. Piker has repeatedly condemned attacks on Judaism and the Jewish people, though his statements have sparked controversy.

Candace Owens, known for her right-wing commentary, has also come under scrutiny for openly antisemitic rhetoric, including claims such as, "Jewish people control the media."

Criticism of the Resolution

Despite the bipartisan effort, critics argue that the resolution is symbolic and unlikely to deter bigotry. The timing has also raised questions, as Congress faces pressing issues such as a potential war with Iran, economic challenges, and numerous legislative priorities. The resolution’s focus on influencers rather than systemic solutions has drawn skepticism about its effectiveness.
