Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth Faces Accusations of Lying Over Iranian Drone Strike
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is under fire for allegedly misleading statements about an Iranian drone strike in early March that resulted in the deaths of six U.S. service members. Survivors of the attack have come forward to dispute Hegseth’s portrayal of the incident, calling his claims falsehoods.
In the aftermath of the missile strike on a troop base, Hegseth minimized the severity of the attack, describing the missile as a “squirter” that “happened to hit a tactical operations center that was fortified.” However, multiple anonymous survivors told CBS that his account was inaccurate.
Survivors Contradict Hegseth’s Claims
One survivor told CBS that “painting a picture that one squeaked through is a falsehood.” Another survivor stated that the unit was “unprepared to provide any defense for itself. It was not a fortified position.” A third survivor described the building’s protection as “about as weak as one gets.”
These accounts directly contradict statements made by Hegseth from the Pentagon podium the day after the attack.
Rep. Pat Ryan Challenges Hegseth in Heated Exchange
During a hearing on Wednesday, Representative Pat Ryan of the House Armed Services Committee pressed Hegseth on the discrepancies. The exchange, captured in a viral video by journalist Aaron Rupar, highlights the tension between the two officials.
“Secretary Hegseth, that is obviously a direct contradiction of what you said from the Pentagon podium the next day. Are you saying these soldiers, our soldiers, who survived this horrific attack, are lying?” Ryan asked.
Hegseth responded by attempting to deflect, stating, “Before the commencement of the conflict, we put in maximum defensive posture—”
Ryan interrupted, saying, “That’s a direct contradiction to what they said.”
Hegseth then responded, “Can I speak, or are you just going to monologue falsehoods all over the place?”
Ryan continued, “It’s not a falsehood.”
Hegseth added, “We moved 7,500 troops off of the—”
Ryan cut in again, saying, “Reclaiming my time. Stop! … I’m reclaiming my time on behalf of these survivors. You just said what they said is a falsehood.”
Hegseth attempted to pivot, stating, “There’s a much larger picture at play here.”
The exchange continued with Ryan demanding a direct answer:
“Are you saying these soldiers, our soldiers, who survived this horrific attack are lying?” Ryan asked.
Hegseth replied, “Before the commencement of the conflic—”
Ryan interrupted once more, saying, “Reclaiming my time. Stop! You just said what they said is a falsehood.”
Hegseth then stated, “There’s a much larger picture at play here.”
The video of the exchange was shared by Aaron Rupar on Twitter on April 29, 2026.
Ryan Demands Accountability for Survivors
Ryan concluded the exchange by emphasizing the importance of truth and accountability:
“Telling the truth is important. And we’re not going to learn from these mistakes if we pretend these mistakes didn’t happen. Secretary Hegseth, those soldiers hold the truth. Those soldiers are braver than you are. They are asking for accountability, and they deserve accountability. I’m asking for the same.”
Hegseth’s alleged misrepresentation of the attack has drawn comparisons to recent reports of the Pentagon allegedly covering up casualties in the Middle East. Despite the gravity of the accusations, the story has struggled to gain traction amid the broader global news cycle.
Ryan, a veteran himself, has been credited for bringing renewed attention to the incident and the survivors’ accounts.
