The Ford Mustang GTD has delivered impressive real-world performance, with a recent dyno test confirming 753 wheel horsepower (WHP) and 609 lb-ft of torque. This output underscores the evolution of Ford’s supercharged 5.2-liter V8 and positions the GTD as a standout in the super muscle car segment.
Dyno Results Exceed Expectations
Ford claims the GTD produces 815 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque at the flywheel. However, a test conducted by Late Model Restoration using a Dynojet dynamometer revealed 753 horsepower (561 kW) and 609 lb-ft (826 Nm) at the rear wheels. This translates to a drivetrain loss of just 7.6% in horsepower and 8.3% in torque—significantly lower than the 10-25% typical in performance cars.
The tested GTD had over 1,100 miles on the odometer, and multiple runs in fifth gear confirmed the consistency of these results.
Torque Delivery Sets the GTD Apart
The GTD’s powertrain, featuring a supercharged 5.2-liter V8 paired with a Tremec TR-9080 eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, delivers power in a way that enhances drivability. The engine produces over 500 lb-ft of torque early in the rev range and maintains a strong, flat torque curve through the midrange, extending all the way to redline. This broad torque delivery makes the GTD feel aggressive across the entire powerband, not just during peak power moments.
GTD Outperforms Shelby GT500 in Real-World Testing
When compared to the Shelby GT500, the GTD’s advantages become clear. On the same dyno, a Carbon Fiber Track Pack GT500 recorded 677.9 rear-wheel horsepower and 566.2 lb-ft of torque. Even after accounting for drivetrain losses, the GTD still outperforms the GT500 by approximately 75 horsepower and 43 lb-ft at the wheels. This gap highlights the GTD’s superior engineering and powertrain efficiency.
Dark Horse SC Buyers Benefit from GTD’s Powertrain
The GTD’s powertrain is nearly identical to the one offered in the Ford Mustang Dark Horse SC, but at a significantly lower price point. This makes the Dark Horse SC an attractive option for enthusiasts seeking GTD-level performance without the premium price tag. The improved torque curve and efficient power delivery ensure that Dark Horse SC buyers will experience thrilling performance in a more accessible package.
