Meta could face fines of up to $12 billion if it fails to address violations of the European Union’s Digital Services Act (DSA), according to a preliminary ruling by the European Commission.
The Commission announced the decision on Wednesday, following a nearly two-year investigation. It concluded that Meta lacks sufficient safeguards to prevent children under 13 from accessing Facebook and Instagram. Additionally, the company fails to identify and remove underage users already on its platforms.
A key issue identified is that minors can bypass age restrictions by entering a false birth date during registration, falsely claiming they are over 13—the minimum age requirement for these services.
