FBI Director Kash Patel’s response to reports of his erratic behavior is reportedly disrupting operations at the agency. According to two sources familiar with the matter, Patel has ordered more than two dozen current and former members of his security team, as well as several IT staffers, to undergo polygraph tests.
The director’s actions follow humiliating media reports detailing Patel’s temper tantrums and unexplained absences. Described as entering a state of "panic mode," Patel’s efforts to save his job have sent shockwaves through the FBI.
During an appearance on MS NOW’s Deadline: White House Thursday, investigative journalist Carol Leonnig explained the impact of Patel’s behavior on the agency.
"This is sending a real chill through the FBI. But even more worrisome to them, Nicolle, is the way in which Patel has not agreed to meet with lots and lots of other operational leaders in the bureau."
Leonnig added that Patel’s withdrawal from meetings with senior bureau leaders has raised serious concerns about his involvement in critical decision-making processes.
"This worries people because there’s a regular sort of line of threats and investigations that the bureau director needs to be briefed on, and needs some input on, of course. There are some decision points that he must be involved in, and this is worrying them."
In response to the reports, Patel has reportedly isolated himself from key operational leaders, refusing to meet with them this week. An FBI spokesperson denied claims that Patel had withdrawn from meetings, but his actions have fueled speculation about his ability to lead effectively.
Patel has also taken legal action against The Atlantic over its original report on his behavior and is reportedly investigating the journalist responsible for the story.
