Honda has revealed prototypes of two new hybrid models—the Accord sedan and the Acura RDX SUV—during its annual business briefing this week. These prototypes are built on a new platform that Honda says will begin launching next year.

The Acura RDX was previously announced as Honda’s first SUV to feature the next-generation version of its two-motor hybrid system. The Accord prototype marks Honda’s latest step toward expanding its hybrid lineup.

Honda Revises EV Targets, Focuses on Hybrid Expansion

In a significant shift in strategy, Honda has dropped its goal of having one-fifth of its sales be electric vehicles (EVs) by 2030. Additionally, the company has abandoned its earlier target of achieving 100% EV and fuel cell vehicle sales by 2040.

Instead, Honda now plans to reallocate more development and production resources into hybrid models, signaling a stronger emphasis on this technology in the near term.

Next-Generation Hybrid Models on the Horizon

Honda is preparing to launch 15 next-generation hybrid models in the coming years, with the new Accord and RDX prototypes serving as the first examples of this strategy. The company’s decision to prioritize hybrids reflects broader industry trends and consumer preferences.
