The Devil Wears Prada 2, the highly anticipated sequel to the 2006 original, includes a series of images that seem to be AI-generated art criticizing Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep), the iconic editor of Runway magazine. However, these pieces were not created by artificial intelligence—they were hand-painted by humans.

Alexis Franklin, an artist, shared a post on Instagram revealing that she painted the artwork at the request of director David Frankel for the film. The image depicts Priestly serving burgers and fries. Franklin captioned her post:

“I got to paint this at the request of David Frankel for The Devil Wears Prada 2 (it shows up in the movie). Absolutely no disrespect to Queen Meryl, but this is something I would’ve painted in my free time, so when they asked me to do this it was nothing but fun.”

Fan Reactions Praise Human-Created Art

Franklin’s followers expressed excitement that the film did not rely on AI for the artwork:

  • “No WAYY!!! I’ll be honest—I thought this was AI shown because of the message the movie was going for, but all painted by you. This is so amazing.”
  • “I THOUGHT THIS WAS AN AI AD. I was like, ‘How dare they use her face in an ad and use AI too!’ So so cool.”
  • “Just saw the film—my designer friends and I lovedddd this!!!! So happy to see that it was human-made.”

Box Office Success and Challenges of the Sequel

The film has been a major success for Disney/20th Century, with estimates projecting $80.5 million in earnings over its opening weekend. Writer Aline Brosh McKenna told TheWrap that bringing the sequel to life was a challenge for years, but collaborating with the original team was essential to its revival.

McKenna reflected on the original film’s enduring popularity, noting:

“The first movie became people’s ‘It’s on TV, I’ll watch it’ movie. And I have some of those, and it’s funny because that is also a vestige, right? Because now we’re a lot more intentional with our watching, so I don’t know if you can become a hit in that way.”
