The Jacksonville Jaguars made their first selection of the 2026 NFL Draft by selecting Texas A&M tight end Nate Boerkircher with the 56th overall pick.
This pick came after the Jaguars traded their 2026 first-round selection as part of a package to move up to the No. 2 overall spot in the 2025 draft, where they selected Travis Hunter.
Jaguars head coach Liam Coen joked about the wait during a press conference on Thursday, stating,
"I waited a lot longer before,"referencing his time as the offensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Rams in 2022. He noted that the Rams did not make their first selection until the 104th overall pick, the second-to-last pick in the third round.
In contrast, the Jaguars' wait this year was significantly shorter, as they selected Boerkircher at No. 56 overall.
Boerkircher, a one-year starter for the Texas A&M Aggies, played as a Y-tight end, participating in 69% of the team's offensive snaps. In his lone season in College Station, he recorded a career-high 19 receptions for 198 yards and three touchdowns after transferring from Nebraska.
The Jaguars currently have only four players under contract at the tight end position. Brenton Strange, Quintin Morris, and Hunter Long are all set to become free agents in 2027, though Strange is expected to return. The team holds a total of 11 draft picks, including four selections within the top 100.
