Meryl Streep stunned Jimmy Kimmel during a Thursday night appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! when she showcased her talent for character voices while reading to her grandchildren.

“Do these kids get to hear you read to them?” Kimmel asked, referencing Streep’s grandchildren. After she confirmed, he quipped, “Oh, wow. They have no idea how good they have it.”

Kimmel then asked if Streep had read Harry Potter to any of her grandchildren, noting he was currently reading the series to his own children.

“Oh, sure. Yeah, I read that to [my daughter] Louisa, who’s now 34,” Streep replied with a laugh. “Not recently. I read it when she was, you know, in like the third grade or something.”

When Kimmel inquired if she does voices for the books’ characters, Streep enthusiastically responded, “Of course!”

“I heard you do the characters, too,” she told Kimmel, who clarified, “No, I do one character. I only do Hagrid. That is the only character that I do, and sometimes I accidentally do Hagrid when it’s other characters speaking… I’m not you. Let’s put it that way.”

Streep laughed and said, “I’m just trying to imagine Snape as [Hagrid].” She then adopted a gruff voice and declared, “I do Hagrid!” Kimmel immediately replied, “Oh, that’s a good Hagrid. It’s better than my Hagrid.”

A clip of the exchange is available below.

Earlier in the interview, Kimmel asked Streep—who has won three Oscars and stars in Devil Wears Prada 2—about the ages of her grandchildren. She initially listed them before correcting herself multiple times, finally settling on: 7-5-4-4-3-3-1.

Kimmel joked in response, “Dial that number. I think you just accidentally gave out your social security number.”

He then asked, “Are you a cool grandma?”

Streep pondered before answering, “I don’t know. Hmm… I think I’m a little like Miranda Priestly as a grandma,” referencing her iconic tyrannical editor role in the Devil Wears Prada films. Her response visibly shocked Kimmel, who replied, “Oof. Really?”

“I like the rules, dear,” Streep explained. “I like the rules.” Kimmel playfully asked, “Have you fired any of the children?” to which Streep laughed and sheepishly replied, “No, but you know…”
