The National Football League (NFL) is taking proactive steps in anticipation of a potential lockout of regular officials. Starting Friday, the league will begin training replacement officials as the current labor deal is set to expire on May 31.

In a separate development, the NFL has officially distributed the 2026 crew configurations for its regular officials. According to Kevin Seifert of ESPN, these assignments were finalized and distributed this week.

Seifert also noted that there are "indications of continued progress" in the ongoing negotiations between the NFL and the NFL Referees Association regarding a potential new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

The league and the referees' union have reportedly reduced efforts to spread public relations propaganda, signaling a more cooperative approach to resolving the dispute. This shift in tone could improve the likelihood of reaching a mutually beneficial agreement for all parties involved.

Negotiations between the NFL and the referees' union are complex, given the high stakes and the broader implications for the sport. A failure to reach an agreement could lead to a repeat of past controversies, such as the 2012 Fail Mary incident, which highlighted the critical role of officials in maintaining the integrity of the game.
