Thousands of overlanding and 4×4 enthusiasts will converge in Flagstaff, Arizona, this weekend for the 2026 Overland Expo West, an event celebrating vehicular exploration and the industry it inspires. As part of the expo, the Overland Expo team selects a vehicle annually to serve as the Ultimate Build Platform—a platform that demonstrates the best in overlanding modifications and capabilities.

For 2026, the chosen vehicle is the Nissan Frontier Pro-4X, a mid-size pickup that has been transformed into a trail-ready overlanding machine.

Meet the 2026 Nissan Frontier Pro-4X Ultimate Build

The Overland Expo team began with a crew cab, short-bed Nissan Frontier Pro-4X, Nissan’s most capable version of the Frontier, and enhanced its off-road readiness to new heights. The final build stands out with its striking Afterburn Orange paint job, turning heads at the expo.

Key Upgrades and Modifications

  • Suspension: The stock Bilstein shocks were replaced with a Fox Racing Shocks system featuring remote reservoirs for improved off-road performance.
  • Protection: NISMO rock sliders were added to safeguard the rocker panels during rugged terrain traversal.
  • Winch: A heavy-duty Comeup winch was installed on the front end to handle recovery situations.
  • Lighting: Diode Dynamics provided a suite of lighting solutions to enhance visibility during nighttime travel and campsite setup.
  • Camping Solution: Tune Outdoor contributed its M1L pop-up bed camper, offering comfortable lodging for overlanding adventures.

Engine and Performance

The Frontier Pro-4X is powered by a 3.8-liter V-6 engine, delivering 310 horsepower and 281 lb-ft of torque. This makes it the most powerful naturally aspirated V-6 in the mid-size truck segment, outperforming only the Jeep Gladiator in a two-truck field. While competitors like Ford, Chevy, GMC, and Toyota have shifted to forced-induction engines for higher power outputs, the Frontier’s simplicity remains a key selling point for overlanders.

"The Frontier Pro-4X is one of the most honest overlanding platforms on the market. It doesn’t pretend to be anything it’s not—and that’s exactly why it works so well. It’s capable, comfortable, and adaptable, which makes it a perfect canvas for long-term overland travel."

— Anthony Sicola, Overland Expo’s build manager for the project

Future Plans for the Ultimate Build

Following its debut at Overland Expo West 2026, the modified Frontier will tour the country, appearing at other Overland Expo events and industry gatherings throughout the year. In the fall, the truck will be auctioned off, with 100% of the proceeds benefiting the Overland Expo Foundation, an organization dedicated to preserving public lands for exploration and enjoyment.
