Opel Corsa GSE vs. Peugeot e-208 GTI: A Hot Hatch Showdown on Shared Tech
The Opel Corsa GSE has arrived, delivering a hot hatch experience with electric power. The new model, unveiled alongside its British sibling Vauxhall, boasts 276 horsepower (281 PS / 207 kW) and accelerates from 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in just 5.5 seconds. This performance outpaces the mechanically identical Peugeot e-208 GTI, which shares the same platform, powertrain, and chassis setup.
Performance and Chassis Upgrades
Under the hood, the Corsa GSE features a single electric motor sending 254 lb-ft (345 Nm) of torque to the front wheels via a limited-slip differential—available only in Sport mode. In Normal mode, power output drops to 228 hp (231 PS / 170 kW). The Corsa GSE’s 5.5-second 0-62 mph time edges out the e-208 GTI’s 5.7 seconds and surpasses the 1,550 kg (3,420 lb) Mokka GSE’s 5.9 seconds.
The Corsa GSE’s performance also outstrips non-Stellantis rivals like the Alpine A290 (6.4 seconds) and Mini Cooper JCW (5.9 seconds). Opel enhances the driving experience with stiffer, lower suspension, uprated brakes featuring four-pot calipers, and improved steering and pedal responses compared to the standard EV.
Design: A Nod to the 1980s Hot Hatch Era
The Corsa GSE’s exterior pays homage to classic hot hatches with a black roof, rear spoiler, sportier bumpers, and three-spoke alloy rims designed to evoke the 1980s Opel Corsa GSE, a rival to the Peugeot 205 GTI. The interior continues the retro theme with plaid bucket seats, Alcantara trim, aluminum pedals, and bold yellow accents. A performance data display provides real-time acceleration stats and G-force readings.
The Michelin Pilot Sport 4S 215/40 R18 tires, wrapped around the distinctive rims, complete the sporty aesthetic.
Range and Battery: Stellantis CMP Platform Shared with e-208 GTI
While Opel has not yet released official range figures for the Corsa GSE, the model uses the same 51 kWh (usable) battery as other Corsas and Stellantis vehicles built on the CMP platform. This suggests a range comparable to the e-208 GTI’s 217 miles (349 km), making the Corsa GSE suitable for urban driving but less ideal for long trips.
For comparison, the upcoming VW ID. Polo GTI is expected to offer over 260 miles (418 km) of range but with just 223 hp (226 PS / 166 kW), placing it at a performance disadvantage against the Corsa GSE.
Opel and Vauxhall Reclaim Hot Hatch Legacy with Electric Power
Opel and Vauxhall are reviving their hot hatch heritage with the Corsa GSE, blending retro design cues with modern electric performance. The model’s launch underscores the brands’ commitment to performance-oriented electric vehicles, even as they share technology with competitors like Peugeot.
"The Corsa GSE proves that electric hot hatches can deliver thrilling performance without sacrificing style or nostalgia."
