The Los Angeles Rams are keeping all options open regarding quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo’s future while also preparing to draft a rookie QB in the 2024 NFL Draft. Garoppolo is weighing retirement, and Rams head coach Sean McVay has stated the team will not pressure him into a decision about returning for a third season.
McVay reiterated this stance during an appearance on ESPN Los Angeles ahead of the first round of the draft, scheduled for Thursday. He also confirmed the Rams have conducted thorough evaluations of top quarterback prospects, positioning the team to make a selection if the opportunity arises over the next three days.
"We do our work on all these positions. Whether you’re saying it’s a Fernando Mendoza, it’s a Ty Simpson, it’s a Garrett Nussmeier, it’s Carson Beck, there are a lot of guys that are going to be good players in this draft and if we feel like it fits for us, you consider it.
"But we are still hopeful and optimistic that you give Jimmy his time, maybe he’ll have a change of heart. I think the best thing you can do — you never want to force somebody to do something. He's earned the right to be able to walk away on his terms and it’s been an amazing career."
The Rams currently have only Stetson Bennett as the backup quarterback behind Matthew Stafford. Stafford’s contract is not guaranteed beyond the 2026 season, making the addition of a rookie QB a strategic move regardless of Garoppolo’s decision. If the Rams draft a quarterback early, it may signal low confidence in Garoppolo returning for another season.
