Rivian has announced significant updates to its planned manufacturing facility in Georgia, including a revised production capacity and adjusted financing terms.
Georgia Plant Expansion and Loan Adjustments
Under the revised plan, Rivian’s Stanton Springs North plant in Georgia will now have an initial annual production capacity of 300,000 vehicles, up from the previously planned 200,000. The automaker stated this change will "facilitate a lower cost per unit, while also providing significant room for future expansion of capacity in later phases."
In conjunction with the plant’s redesign, Rivian has updated its Department of Energy (DOE) loan agreement. The original $6.6 billion loan has been reduced to $4.5 billion, aligning with the revised facility design and production roadmap. The DOE loan was originally structured for two production phases totaling 400,000 units annually, but the new agreement consolidates this into a single phase, enabling Rivian to "draw on the loan sooner and have greater initial production."
Construction milestones include the start of vertical construction this spring, with preparations underway for the stamping press area—a capital-intensive and technically demanding component of the plant. Rivian plans to begin using the loan funds in 2027, with production at the Georgia plant expected to commence in late 2028.
Rivian’s Q1 2026 Financial Performance
In addition to the Georgia plant updates, Rivian released its first-quarter 2026 financial results:
- Vehicle production: 10,236 units built
- Vehicle deliveries: 10,365 units delivered to customers
- Revenue: $1.38 billion, an 11% increase from the prior period
- Net loss: $416 million, an improvement from a $541 million loss in Q1 2025
- Other income: Included a $506 million gain from the Series A capital raise and deconsolidation of Mind Robotics
2026 Outlook
Rivian’s 2026 delivery guidance ranges between 62,000 and 67,000 vehicles. However, the company anticipates an adjusted EBITDA loss of $1.8 to $2.1 billion for the year.
R2 Production Progress
The R2 SUV, recently launched in Normal, Illinois, is expected to drive future growth. Rivian has positioned the R2 as a key model to improve profitability and scale production.
