Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the anti-vaccine health secretary, announced new federal initiatives to curb the prescribing of antidepressants during a brief appearance at a Make America Healthy Again Institute event on Monday. Kennedy has long made false and dangerous claims about antidepressants, which mental health experts have repeatedly condemned.

The event, centered on the theme of "overmedicalization," featured participants alleging—without evidence—that too many Americans, particularly youths, are overprescribed antidepressants in the class of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). This class includes widely used medications such as Zoloft, Prozac, Paxil, and Lexapro, which are prescribed to treat depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, and other conditions. Participants also claimed that these drugs are prescribed without informed consent, are harmful, and can be difficult to discontinue.

Kennedy’s False and Dangerous Claims About Antidepressants

Kennedy’s statements closely mirror the claims made at the event. Among his most controversial assertions, he has repeatedly suggested that SSRIs are overprescribed, including to children, and that they can induce violent behavior. He has even gone so far as to claim that antidepressants are a cause of mass shootings, including school shootings.

In a podcast interview last year, Kennedy made the inflammatory claim that "every Black kid is now just standard put on Adderall, SSRIs, benzos, which are known to induce violence." His proposed solution to this alleged problem was for Black children to be "reparented" and placed on farms.

Expert Backlash Against Kennedy’s Rhetoric

Mental health professionals and advocacy groups have strongly criticized Kennedy’s rhetoric, emphasizing that his claims are not supported by scientific evidence. They warn that such statements could discourage individuals from seeking necessary mental health treatment and contribute to the stigma surrounding antidepressant use.
