Smart has previewed Concept #2, a modern two-seat city electric vehicle (EV) that revives the spirit of the original 1998 ForTwo. The concept will debut at the Beijing Auto Show later this month, sharing the stage with Smart’s new China-only #6 sedan.

ForTwo’s Iconic Return

The original ForTwo, which ceased production in 2024, was renowned for its compact size—barely occupying half a parking space. Now, Smart is teasing its comeback with Concept #2, a long-awaited successor that retains the ForTwo’s distinctive silhouette while embracing a modern, premium identity.

Design and Inspiration

While full technical and design details remain undisclosed, early sketches and teaser images reveal key design cues. The #2’s profile closely mirrors the original ForTwo, though with noticeably fatter wheel arches. Its front end adopts the family face shared with other new-generation Smarts, including the #1, #3, and #5.

Smart describes the concept’s aesthetic as a matte white and warm gold two-tone finish, with fashion-inspired details such as buckle-like elements and leather touches. This departure from bare-bones microcars aligns with Smart’s shift toward premium EV offerings. The brand now positions itself as a high-end mobility provider, moving beyond its original microcar roots.

Engineering Challenges and Emotional Significance

Smart CEO Tong Xiangbei previously acknowledged the engineering challenges of building a tiny EV on a fresh platform. Packaging batteries, safety systems, and practicality into such a compact vehicle requires expert-level problem-solving. However, the #2 holds emotional significance for enthusiasts, as it embodies the quirky, fun spirit of city motoring that defined Smart’s early success.

Beijing Auto Show Debut

The full Concept #2 will be unveiled on April 22 at the Beijing Auto Show, where it will share the spotlight with the new #6 EHD fastback sedan. Designed by the Mercedes-Benz Global Design team, the #6 is positioned as a more affordable alternative to the Mercedes EQE.
