Sony released its most recent quarterly earnings report this morning, revealing mixed financial results. While the overall report was not positive, the document contained a glimmer of hope for fans of Bungie’s Marathon, the extraction shooter launched earlier this year.

The game has not met sales or player expectations, yet it has received strong critical and player acclaim. As a result, PlayStation is not yet ready to discontinue the title.

Sony’s Financial Struggles with Bungie Acquisition

During the earnings call, Sony’s chief financial officer Lin Tao addressed the financial performance of Bungie’s portfolio, stating:

"Earnings from Bungie's title portfolio did not reach our expectations, so we downwardly revised our business plan and impaired the full amount of the fixed assets related to Bungie except for goodwill."

Sony acquired Bungie in 2022 for $3.7 billion. The latest report indicates a $765 million impairment loss on the purchase, reflecting the reduced assumed sale value of the studio if sold today. While the news is discouraging overall, Marathon fans can take some solace in the game’s positive reception.

Marathon’s Strong Player Engagement

Tao highlighted Marathon’s performance, noting:

"Player reception to Marathon is strong, with the game receiving a Metacritic score of 82 and more than 90 percent of the player reviews on Steam being positive. Engagement metrics such as retention also remain at a high level."

Looking ahead, Sony plans to enhance the game’s performance by:

  • Retaining highly engaged core users through additional content;
  • Improving the gameplay experience;
  • Expanding the user base.

Marathon’s second content season is scheduled to launch in June.

Uncertain Future for Bungie’s Portfolio

It remains unclear whether Sony views Marathon as a long-term investment or if the company is delaying a full write-down of Bungie’s acquisition. However, the game must show revenue improvements soon, or Sony may face difficult decisions.

Meanwhile, Destiny 2, Bungie’s other major title, faces a different challenge. A large update for the game has been postponed indefinitely, with the studio promising further details in June.
