The Trump administration and congressional Republicans spent the past year attempting to weaken the Endangered Species Act, the nation’s foundational conservation law. However, one of their most aggressive efforts encountered a significant obstacle—partly due to internal party concerns.

Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives unexpectedly canceled a scheduled vote for Wednesday, April 22, 2020—Earth Day—on a bill that sought to permanently enshrine many of President Donald Trump’s changes to endangered species protections. Some lawmakers, particularly those representing tourism-dependent regions along the Gulf of Mexico, voiced reservations about the legislation.

“Don’t tread on my turtles. Protected means protected.”

US Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.) wrote this in a Monday, April 20, 2020 social media post ahead of the then-pending vote.
