Around the same time, White House chief of staff Susie Wiles convened a meeting of Trump’s most trusted advisers. The issue? No one was being honest with the president about the war’s domestic consequences.

Privately, Wiles had warned that the inner circle’s overly optimistic portrayal of the conflict could leave Trump unaware of the political fallout, Time magazine reported earlier this month.
