Trump Pushes to Suspend Federal Gas Tax Amid Rising Fuel Prices

President Donald Trump has proposed suspending the federal gas tax, a move that would save drivers 18.4 cents per gallon of gasoline. The proposal requires Congressional support and could result in reduced highway funding.

Gas Prices Reach Record Highs

The national average price of gasoline has climbed to $4.52 per gallon, a significant increase from $1.385 per gallon a year ago. Diesel prices have also surged, reaching $5.636 per gallon, just 18 cents below the all-time high.

Administration Considers Multiple Solutions

Energy Secretary Chris Wright stated on Meet the Press that the Trump administration is "open to all ideas" to lower gas prices, including suspending the federal gas tax. Wright emphasized, "All measures that can be taken to lower the price at the pump and lower the prices for Americans, this administration is in support of."

Trump Endorses Temporary Gas Tax Suspension

In a recent interview with CBS News, Trump confirmed his support for the measure, stating,

"We’re going to take off the gas tax for a period of time, and when gas goes down, we’ll let it phase back in."

Congressional Approval Required

Suspending the gas tax would require Congressional action and could cost the government approximately $500 million per week in lost revenue. Despite the challenges, bipartisan support for the idea is emerging among some Democrats and Republicans.

Geopolitical Tensions Drive Fuel Costs

The Strait of Hormuz remains effectively closed, contributing to the surge in fuel prices. Meanwhile, negotiations to end the war in Iran have stalled, with Trump suggesting a potential end to the ceasefire. However, the White House has a history of issuing threats without follow-through.
