New Orleans Saints edge rusher Tyree Wilson is embracing a fresh start with his new team after a challenging stint with the Las Vegas Raiders. Wilson, the seventh overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, expressed optimism about his future in New Orleans during a Monday press conference.
Wilson sees his new teammate Chase Young as a valuable role model. Young, the second overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, overcame early injuries and career setbacks to revitalize his performance after joining the Saints in 2024. Young has recorded 15.5 sacks over the past two seasons, reversing his career trajectory.
Wilson was acquired by the Saints in a trade with the Raiders during the 2023 draft. Reflecting on his transition, Wilson stated,
"It's a blessing to be a high first-round pick, but you're always going to have the label. They look at you as the franchise guy. From the outside looking in, the fans want you ready immediately. But it always doesn't work out that way. Everybody's timetable in the NFL is different."
He added,
"I'm glad I'm here, I'm glad for the fresh start and I'm ready to dominate on the field. I feel like my game has taken a big leap from the first few years and it's continually going up. Stats don't make everything, but a lot of people look at stats. I'm here to play great defense and be a great teammate, and the rest of the stuff will follow."
Wilson acknowledged the pressure of high expectations but emphasized his growth and readiness. The Saints have chosen not to pick up his fifth-year option, giving him an opportunity to prove himself and potentially secure a long-term deal in New Orleans. Young leveraged a similar opportunity last season, signing a three-year contract before the 2024 campaign.
