Universal Adjusts Release Dates for Upcoming Franchise Films

Universal Pictures has announced significant changes to the release schedules of two major franchise films. “Miami Vice ’85” will move from August 6, 2027 to May 19, 2028, while the next installment in “The Mummy” franchise will shift from May 19, 2028 to October 15, 2027.

The studio also revealed plans to release an Untitled Universal Event Film on August 6, 2027 and an Untitled Blumhouse Event Film on October 8, 2027.

“Miami Vice ’85”

“Miami Vice ’85” is a remake directed by Joe Kosinski, known for helming “Top Gun: Maverick”. The film stars Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler.

The project is produced by Dylan Clark of Dylan Clark Productions, which previously worked on “The Batman” and “The Penguin”. Kosinski, who also directed “F1”, serves as a producer alongside Clark.

The screenplay is written by Dan Gilroy, an Academy Award nominee, based on characters created by Anthony Yerkovich. Yerkovich executive produced the original series alongside Michael Mann. Earlier drafts of the script were penned by Eric Warren Singer.

For Universal, Sara Scott, Executive Vice President of Production Development, and Christina Hoffrogge, Creative Executive of Production Development, will oversee the project.

“The Mummy” Franchise Installment

The next film in “The Mummy” franchise will be directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett of Radio Silence. The movie stars Academy Award winners Rachel Weisz and Brendan Fraser.

The screenplay is written by David Coggeshall, with plot details currently under wraps. The film is produced by franchise veteran Sean Daniel alongside William Sherak, James Vanderbilt, and Paul Neinstein of Project X Entertainment.

Fraser, Jason F. Brown of Hivemind, and Denis Stewart will serve as executive producers. For Universal, Jay Polidoro, Executive Vice President of Production Development, and Jacqueline Garell, Director of Production Development, will oversee the production.
