米国の最高裁判所は12日、バージニア州民主党による選挙区再編案の緊急申請を却下する判断を示した。これにより、11月の中間選挙に向けた州の選挙区割り変更の動きは事実上終了した。
今回の判断は、バージニア州最高裁が2023年に選挙区再編案を「有権者による承認にもかかわらず違憲」と判断し、民主党が州の選挙区割りを変更しようとした経緯に端を発する。民主党は州最高裁の判決を覆すため、連邦最高裁に緊急申請を行っていたが、却下された。
連邦最高裁は今回の判断について、理由を示していない。今後、民主党側がさらなる法的手段に訴える可能性もあるが、現時点では選挙区再編の再開は困難な状況となった。
