Tom Steyer, a billionaire and prominent progressive candidate in California’s gubernatorial race, is positioning himself as the state’s most outspoken challenger to the Trump administration. The California primary election, scheduled for June 2, will determine the top two candidates who advance to the general election in November, regardless of party affiliation.
The outcome of this race carries national significance. As the federal government faces accusations of undermining American democracy, the leadership of California—a state with the largest economy and population in the U.S.—could play a pivotal role in resisting federal overreach. Governor Gavin Newsom, currently a vocal leader in the national anti-Trump resistance, is preparing for a likely presidential run in 2028, leaving the next governor to shape the state’s response to federal policies.
The gubernatorial race remains highly competitive, with multiple candidates vying for a spot in the runoff. Steyer has emerged as a frontrunner, leveraging his influence as a major donor to liberal causes, including early efforts to impeach Donald Trump and California’s recent Democratic gerrymandering.
Steyer has secured an endorsement from Bernie Sanders’s Our Revolution group, reinforcing his progressive credentials. His campaign platform includes aggressive measures to counter the Trump administration, such as investigating ICE agents and White House officials for potential criminal activity. Notably, Steyer has publicly stated his intent to pursue Stephen Miller, a key architect of the administration’s immigration policies.
Steyer’s Vision for California’s Role in Resisting Federal Overreach
To better understand Steyer’s perspective on the state’s role in opposing federal authority, we spoke with him on Monday. Below is an edited transcript of our conversation, condensed for clarity and length.
Is the U.S. Facing an Authoritarian Emergency?
I think that we are under absolutely authoritarian threat. It is absolutely a crisis. There is a deliberate attempt by the Trump administration to take away Americans’ democratic rights, including free and fair elections. This is a model we’ve seen around the world, where authoritarian, anti-democratic parties use the processes of democracy to destroy democracy. Is that going on? Absolutely, that is going on. And so, is that a crisis? If you believe in democracy—which I fervently do—then it’s a crisis and it requires people to stand up and oppose it.
Steyer’s remarks underscore his commitment to challenging what he views as systemic threats to democratic institutions. His campaign emphasizes proactive measures to hold federal officials accountable, framing California’s next governor as a critical bulwark against authoritarianism.
