ChatGPT is facing challenges in maintaining its rapid user growth as users increasingly uninstall the app or turn to competing chatbots. According to data from Sensor Tower, a market intelligence firm, ChatGPT experienced a 132% year-over-year increase in uninstalls in April.
This uninstall rate surged even higher last month, with a 413% year-over-year increase following OpenAI's controversial deal with the Pentagon in February. The partnership raised concerns among users about data privacy and ethical implications, potentially contributing to the decline.
While ChatGPT continues to expand its user base, the pace of growth is slowing significantly. Sensor Tower reports that monthly active users grew by 168% in January, but this figure dropped to 78% in April. Despite the slowdown, ChatGPT still maintains a substantially larger user base compared to its competitors.
OpenAI has not yet publicly addressed the decline in growth or the rising uninstall rates. The company's upcoming IPO plans may face additional scrutiny as these trends raise questions about ChatGPT's long-term sustainability and user retention.
