The Formula 1 Crypto.com Miami Grand Prix returns to the Hard Rock Stadium’s 3.3-mile Miami International Autodrome for its fifth year, promising a transformed experience for spectators and the city alike. This year’s event introduces new activations, enhanced sight lines, and a deeper connection to Miami’s culture, signaling Formula 1’s commitment to the U.S. market.
Formula 1’s Strategic Shift in the U.S.
Formula 1’s approach to the U.S. has evolved significantly. Liam Parker, Chief Communications and Corporate Relations Officer at Formula 1, highlights the sport’s past shortcomings:
“We used to turn up in the U.S., race, and [then] expect everyone in the U.S. to continue to stay in love with us, engage with us, and that was probably arrogant.”
The turning point came in 2017 when Liberty Media Corp. acquired Formula 1, recognizing the sport’s untapped potential in the U.S. With a current valuation of approximately $3.6 billion, Formula 1 has doubled down on the American market, starting with the Circuit of the Americas in Austin as its first modern U.S. race.
Parker emphasizes the importance of Miami’s role:
“It was the second race to join us from the U.S. It was a big test case. If Miami hadn’t gone well, people might have started to say ‘Can F1 really make a success of the U.S.?’”As the first U.S. circuit race, the Miami GP sets the tone for Formula 1’s commercial growth in the region.
Designing the Miami Grand Prix Experience
Formula 1 is not competing with traditional sports like the NFL, NBA, or MLB but with broader entertainment and attention spans. Parker explains that relevance in the U.S. requires a focus on “people’s mindsets, news feeds, and their lifestyle.”
The inaugural Miami GP in 2021 delivered strong results, with nearly 243,000 spectators and 2.6 million television viewers. Despite challenges like extreme heat, attendance has since grown to around 275,000 people. This year, the event is evolving into a full Miami experience, led by Katharina Nowak, President of the Miami GP.

Formula 1’s Long-Term U.S. Vision
With its agreement to host the Miami GP until 2041, Formula 1 is making a clear statement: the U.S. is a cornerstone of its global strategy. The upgrades in Miami reflect a broader shift from transient visits to sustained investment, ensuring the sport’s growth and relevance in one of the world’s largest markets.
