Rep. Chuck Edwards (R-N.C.) told a young female staffer in May 2025 that it was "disappointing to feel something that used to be easy has gotten complicated" after she declined an invitation to dinner, according to a text exchange reviewed by Axios.
The staffer had expressed concerns about rumors surrounding their interactions, to which Edwards replied:
"It's disappointing to feel something that used to be easy has gotten complicated…I didn't expect outside chatter to change that."
Why this matters: The female staffer complained about Edwards' behavior and feared retaliation from the congressman. Axios reviewed text messages, photographs, and interviewed four anonymous sources familiar with the interactions to corroborate the allegations.
The new accounts—including drinking outings, casino visits, and unwanted attention toward the female staffer—build on previous reporting about Edwards' conduct toward young female staffers. The House Ethics Committee has since launched an investigation into the congressman, who has denied any wrongdoing.
Staffer Describes Feeling Objectified and Fear of Retaliation
The unnamed staffer, whom Axios will not identify due to the sensitive nature of the allegations, declined to discuss her interactions with Edwards when contacted. However, she told another person that she felt uncomfortable and objectified after Edwards frequently complimented her appearance.
Three sources told Axios that the staffer later raised her concerns about Edwards' behavior with his chief of staff. The sources said the chief spoke with the congressman about the matter shortly before the staffer left his office.
Edwards Denies Wrongdoing Amid Ethics Investigation
Edwards did not respond to multiple requests for comment. In a statement to CNN on Tuesday, he said:
"I think you're gonna find that when Ethics completes their investigation, that the facts will have caught up with all the gossip and the rumor."
In an interview with The Assembly last week, Edwards dismissed claims of improper behavior toward female staffers as "horseshit," though he did not directly address the specific allegations reported by Axios.
Unusual Gesture at Staffer's Farewell Party
Edwards, 65, has been married since 1980. Four sources told Axios that he wrote a flattering poem for the female staffer, which he read aloud at her office-wide going-away party. The poem left staff members deeply uncomfortable, as Edwards choked up and became teary-eyed while reciting it. A slideshow featuring photos of him and the staffer played in the background.
The sources noted that Edwards rarely writes poems or organizes such personal celebrations for departing aides. Axios previously reported that he also wrote the staffer a goodbye note, telling her she had "written a complex chapter in my heart."
