Volkswagen ID. Polo EV: Affordable Electric Hatchback with Premium Comfort
Volkswagen has officially launched pre-sales for its all-new ID. Polo EV, an affordable electric hatchback that combines retro-inspired design with modern electric mobility. The vehicle is now available for order in Germany, with deliveries expected to begin in the coming months.
Pricing and Availability
Pre-sales for the ID. Polo EV commenced this week, with the entry-level Trend trim starting at €24,995. However, the only currently available configuration is the mid-spec Life trim, which begins at €33,795. Additional variants are set to launch in summer 2025.
Range and Charging Capabilities
The ID. Polo EV offers three power outputs at launch:
- 114 hp (116 PS / 85 kW) with a 37 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery, delivering up to 204 miles (329 km) of range and DC fast charging at up to 90 kW (10-to-80% charge in ~27 minutes).
- 133 hp (135 PS / 99 kW) with the same 37 kWh battery, offering identical range and charging speeds.
- 208 hp (211 PS / 155 kW) paired with a 52 kWh nickel-manganese-cobalt battery, extending range to 283 miles (455 km) and supporting DC charging up to 105 kW (10-to-80% charge in ~24 minutes).
A GTI variant with 223 hp (226 PS / 166 kW) is scheduled for release in 2027.
Platform and Dimensions
The ID. Polo EV is built on Volkswagen’s front-wheel drive MEB+ platform, a next-generation electric architecture designed for efficiency and space optimization. Key dimensions include:
- Length: 4,053 mm (159.6 inches)
- Width: 1,816 mm (71.5 inches)
- Height: 1,530 mm (60.2 inches)
- Wheelbase: 2,600 mm (102.4 inches)
The MEB+ platform eliminates the need for a motor under the cargo floor, increasing luggage volume by 25% compared to the combustion-powered Polo—from 351 liters to 441 liters. With rear seats folded, cargo capacity expands to 1,243 liters. Interior space also gains an additional 19 mm of legroom for rear passengers.
Design and Interior
The ID. Polo EV’s exterior closely mirrors the 2023 ID.2all concept, featuring chiseled lines, fat five-spoke wheels, and a choice of blue paint. Rear door handles are concealed near the C-pillar for a cleaner aesthetic, while the rear features a wide transverse light bar topped with an illuminated red VW roundel.
The interior adopts a retro-digital theme, blending classic Volkswagen design cues with modern technology. Notable features include:
- Pneumatic seat massagers for enhanced passenger comfort.
- A retro-style digital display integrated into the dashboard.
Legacy and Market Position
The Polo nameplate has a storied history, with over 20 million units sold since its launch more than 50 years ago. The ID. Polo EV represents Volkswagen’s commitment to electrifying its iconic lineup while maintaining affordability and practicality.
Competitive Landscape
The ID. Polo EV competes closely in size with the Renault 5 E-Tech and the Cupra Raval, though it is 131 mm shorter and 42 mm narrower than the Renault. It shares its platform and running gear with the Skoda Epiq, another electric hatchback in Volkswagen Group’s portfolio.
For now, the ID. Polo EV is available exclusively in Germany, with broader European availability expected in the coming months. Volkswagen has not yet confirmed pricing or availability for the U.S. market.
