Rep. Chuck Edwards, a Republican from North Carolina, has been accused of inappropriate conduct toward two female staffers in their 20s, prompting a House Ethics Committee probe, according to sources familiar with the matter.
The investigation was initiated in part due to Edwards' behavior toward the staffers, three sources told Axios. These sources described Edwards' actions as crossing professional boundaries and creating an uncomfortable work environment. To protect against retaliation, the sources requested anonymity.
One of the staffers, whose identity Axios is withholding due to the sensitive nature of the allegations, declined to comment when contacted. However, the three sources reported that the staffer expressed discomfort about Edwards' behavior multiple times during and after her employment in his office.
Edwards did not respond to multiple requests for comment.
In a statement issued Thursday to Axios regarding the Ethics Committee investigation, Edwards said:
"I welcome any investigation, given the professionalism my staff has demonstrated and my commitment to serving the people of Western NC. Given the current political environment we are facing in our nation, it comes as no surprise that others with their own political agendas will attempt to raise false accusations in order to create news stories."
Edwards and the woman reportedly vacationed together in Las Vegas months after she left his office, according to two sources familiar with the trip. Receipts reviewed by Axios show Edwards booked two rooms at the Bellagio hotel from November 8 to November 11, 2025. Messages indicated the woman was in Las Vegas on at least one of those dates.
At the time, staff in Edwards' office were reportedly concerned about the congressman returning to Washington to vote on reopening the government amid shutdown-related airport delays, the sources said.
Edwards expressed deep personal affection for the staffer in a three-page handwritten note he gave her shortly before she left his office. The letter, reviewed by Axios, included the following passages:
"You are the most amazing woman," the letter began. "I only wish I could explain the joy and meaning to me for the time we spent together at the office — but especially away from it."
"Your kindness, encouragement, and light-heartedness have written a complex chapter in my heart that I will never stop reading."
The letter concluded with:
"With my lifetime of appreciation and devotion, Chuck."
Edwards, 65, has been married since 1980.
Sources also revealed that Edwards purchased personal gifts for the staffer while she was employed by him, including jewelry. One gift was a custom puzzle that, when assembled, revealed an image of actor Adam Sandler alongside a handwritten message.
