King Charles III addressed a joint session of Congress on Tuesday, marking the second time a king has spoken to the U.S. legislative body in modern history. The first occasion occurred during President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address.
NBC’s Jimmy Fallon opened his Tonight Show monologue by highlighting King Charles’ visit to the United States this week, which coincides with the 250th anniversary of America. The president welcomed the monarch to the White House, where the two held a meeting before Charles delivered his historic address.
“Yeah, it was the first time a king addressed Congress since President Trump spoke at the State of the Union,” Fallon joked.
The punchline initially drew a muted response from the audience, though laughter grew as Fallon paused to emphasize the remark.
Fallon then predicted reactions from members of Congress, using their last names as punchlines—a recurring bit in his monologues. He began with Senator Angus King, joking, “Senator Angus King was excited to hear a speech from an actual, well … my last name.”
The host continued with additional jokes targeting other lawmakers, each tailored to their surnames. He also referenced Trump’s address on the South Lawn during King Charles’ visit, where the president remarked that his mother had a crush on the monarch “because he was so cute.”
“Charles was like, ‘Aww, and my mother … also said things about you,’” Fallon quipped.
