White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt is facing criticism after a viral video captured her making a controversial joke just hours before the White House Correspondents' Dinner (WHCD) on April 26, 2026, was abruptly canceled following a shooting incident at the Washington Hilton.

In a video shared on X (formerly Twitter), Leavitt spoke with Fox News before entering the ballroom, teasing the anticipated speech by former President Donald Trump. She remarked:

"It will be funny, it’ll be entertaining, there will be some shots fired tonight in the room. So, everyone should tune in. It’s gonna be really great. I’m looking forward to hearing it."

Minutes later, a male suspect was apprehended by the Secret Service and local authorities after allegedly bringing a shotgun, handgun, and multiple knives into the event. The suspect reportedly shot one Secret Service officer before being detained. The incident forced the cancellation of the WHCD, with Trump vowing to reschedule the event within the next month.

Leavitt’s comment quickly became a focal point on social media, with users criticizing her choice of words in light of the unfolding events. One X user wrote:

"This will NOT help her fight against conspiracy theorists," referencing the rise of unfounded theories following recent assassination attempts on Trump.

Other users joked that Leavitt "knew something" and staged the incident to influence polling, while some dismissed her remarks as an unfortunate coincidence. However, several users defended Leavitt, arguing that "shots fired" could refer to a witty comeback or comedic remark rather than a literal threat.

During a press briefing, Trump confirmed the suspect had been arrested and described him as a "sick person" from California. He also noted that the injured Secret Service agent, who was wearing a bulletproof vest, was in stable condition. Interim Chief of the Metropolitan Police Department Jeffery W. Carroll later revealed that the suspect was armed with a shotgun, handgun, and multiple knives and was staying at the hotel as a guest. Carroll stated the suspect acted alone and was not struck by gunfire.

As previously reported, Trump was rushed from the venue amid the gunshots and later shared that he had planned a sharp-toned speech, saying:

"I said to my people, ‘This would be the most inappropriate speech ever made.’ But I don’t know if I could ever be as rough as I was going to be tonight. I think I’m going to be probably very nice."

The WHCD was ultimately canceled, with Trump expressing his intention to reschedule the event.
