Bungie has begun ramping up toward the second season of its extraction shooter Marathon, but early details suggest it may struggle to reignite player interest. Season 2, titled "Nightfall," launches on June 2 and must deliver compelling content to retain existing players and attract new ones—especially after a progress wipe that will reset inventories and Faction progress.
So far, the announced additions for Season 2 include:
- A new Runner Shell
- A nighttime variant of the Dire Marsh map, called Night Marsh
- A tease of a new system called The Cradle
- New guns, mods, and enemies
A full reveal of Season 2’s contents is scheduled for the week of May 25, according to Bungie. However, based on the current details, there’s little indication of groundbreaking changes that could significantly boost engagement.

Sony recently reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Marathon despite its underwhelming sales and player numbers. During a financial update, Sony CFO Lin Tao highlighted the game’s strong reception, noting:
"Player reception to Marathon is strong, with the game receiving a Metacritic score of 82 and more than 90 percent of the player reviews on Steam being positive. Engagement metrics such as retention also remain at a high level."
Tao added that Sony and PlayStation would "aim to improve the performance of the game by working to retain highly engaged core users through the introduction of additional content, further improvements in the gameplay experience and expansion of the user base."
Season 2 represents the first major step in that effort, but early reactions suggest it may not be enough to "move the needle." The author of this piece, a former dedicated player, admitted they haven’t logged in for weeks and don’t feel compelled to return. If even long-time fans aren’t inspired, the future of Marathon remains uncertain.
