Meta Implements Extensive Employee Surveillance Software to Train AI Models, Raises Privacy Concerns

Meta, the company led by Mark Zuckerberg, is installing new tracking software on all US-based employees' computers. The software, called Model Capability Initiative, monitors mouse movements, keystrokes, and occasionally takes screenshots. This data will be used to train the company's AI models, according to an internal memo obtained by Reuters.

The goal is to guide Meta’s AI models to replicate human-computer interactions, such as using dropdown menus or keyboard shortcuts. The memo states,

“This is where all Meta employees can help our models get better simply by doing their daily work.”

AI Training and Employee Replacement Concerns

Meta is reportedly developing AI agents capable of completing work tasks autonomously. This initiative raises ethical concerns about employees being forced to train their own AI replacements. The move is one of the most conspicuous efforts to automate human workers' jobs in recent times.

Data Privacy and Legal Implications

The news also raises significant questions about data privacy. Meta has a history of mishandling personal data, and this new tracking initiative further exacerbates concerns. Meta spokesperson Andy Stone told Reuters that the company is implementing safeguards to protect “sensitive content,” but did not provide further details.

According to Yale University law professor Ifeoma Ajunwa, there are no federal limits on worker surveillance in the US. However, tracking employees' keystrokes and mouse movements would likely violate European law.

Meta’s Workforce Reduction Plan

In addition to the surveillance initiative, Meta plans to reduce its global workforce by 10% starting next month. This is the first of several planned cuts expected to occur later this year.
