Spoilers ahead for the Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 2 finale.

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 2 may feature some of the series’ most epic Titan battles yet, but its core narrative remains deeply human. From Cate’s refusal to abandon Lee Shaw in Axis Mundi to Kentaro’s desperate attempt to save a father he refuses to accept is gone, the season has been defined by raw emotion, impossible choices, and lasting consequences. Nowhere has this been more evident than in the journey of Keiko Randa, the brilliant, time-displaced scientist who endures profound loss and upheaval across 10 episodes.

Keiko Randa’s Season 2 Journey: A Decade of Pain in 10 Days

“They really tortured her through the season,” Mari Yamamoto, who portrays Keiko, told Den of Geek with a laugh. “I think she probably needs a lot of therapy, right? Because it’s been 10 days…the whole season is actually just 10 days, isn’t that crazy? I’ve been describing it as she’s grieving while she’s running.”

Over those 10 days, Keiko experiences a cascade of trauma:

  • She loses her son, Hiroshi.
  • She learns that Lee Shaw consciously chose to leave her in Axis Mundi to protect the future.
  • She discovers that a letter she wrote confessing her feelings for Lee contributed to the breakup of the family she left behind.
  • She locates the site where Bill Randa likely died on Skull Island.
  • She finds a series of notes from Bill, affirming he never stopped searching for his wife.

“I think she gets to a place around episode seven or eight, when [she and Cate] are on their mission to get Co-cai [a.k.a. Titan X] back on track,” Yamamoto explained. “For her, there is a sense that, ‘I’ve literally lost my son too. If I die doing this, I’m okay with it. If I die doing this but I can save people, then maybe it’s worth having traveled in time and lost everybody.’”

“She’s at a place where…I wouldn’t call it suicidal, but I think it’s a very ‘ready to really risk it all’ kind of place. But then she comes back from it. And I think that forging this bond with Cate, seeing Cate accomplish this monumental task of getting a Titan back on track, it reignites her own excitement about Titans and the work she was doing.”

An Alternate Finale: Keiko’s Almost-Fatal Choice

Keiko’s relationship with her granddaughter Cate Randa doesn’t just give her purpose in her unfamiliar modern life—it nearly led to a different ending in the Monarch finale.

“One thing I will say is that I think the reason that she finds the will to live again is Cate,” Yamamoto revealed. “In the original cut, Keiko could choose if she wanted to go back to the past with Lee. And she almost steps in, but then she turns back for Cate.”

Despite their differences, Keiko and Cate share striking similarities—both driven by relentless curiosity and an unshakable drive to uncover the truth, no matter the cost.

“I think she gets to a place around episode seven or eight… there is a sense that, ‘I’ve literally lost my son too, if I die doing this, I’m okay with it. If I die doing this but I can save people, then maybe it’s worth having traveled in time and lost everybody.’”

Why Keiko’s Story Matters

Keiko’s journey reflects the season’s central theme: survival isn’t just physical—it’s emotional and psychological. Her arc culminates in a powerful realization: connection, not isolation, gives life meaning. Even in a world of Titans and time travel, it’s the bond between Keiko and Cate that ultimately pulls her back from the brink.
