Nissan’s Frontier Pro plug-in hybrid (PHEV) could fill the gap left by the discontinued Navara in Europe. The truck, co-developed with Dongfeng, features a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine paired with an electric motor, producing a combined 402 hp and 590 lb-ft (800 Nm) of torque.
The Frontier Pro made its debut in China last year as a global model, with Chinese showrooms receiving it in late 2025. However, it has not yet appeared in other markets. Nissan is now considering Europe as a potential launch destination for the PHEV pickup.
Europe Under Consideration
Nissan divisional vice president Jordi Vila confirmed to Auto Express that the Frontier Pro PHEV remains under study for Europe. Vila stated:
“The Frontier Pro PHEV is a pick-up which is under study. It’s a vehicle which we believe has potential for Europe.”
For the Frontier Pro to enter Europe, it must meet stringent local standards at Nissan’s UK engineering center. This includes compliance with European crash requirements and regulatory approval for its plug-in hybrid system.
Powertrain and Performance
The Frontier Pro’s powertrain combines a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor integrated into the transmission. Its specifications include:
- Combined output: 402 hp and 590 lb-ft (800 Nm) of torque
- All-wheel drive: Intelligent system with an electromechanical rear differential lock
- Electric range: 84 miles (135 km)
These figures position the Frontier Pro to compete with models like the BYD Shark 6.
Rebadged Dongfeng Z9
The Frontier Pro is not a bespoke Nissan-Dongfeng model. Instead, it is largely a rebadged version of the Dongfeng Z9, which debuted at the start of 2025. If the Frontier Pro launches in Europe, other Dongfeng-Nissan models, such as the NX8, sold in China, could follow.
