The Renault Kangoo Couleur is a limited-edition minivan designed exclusively for the Japanese market, blending rugged aesthetics with vibrant colors and a manual transmission option. This special edition reimagines the utilitarian Kangoo as a lifestyle vehicle, departing from its traditional role as a delivery or family van in Europe.
At first glance, the Kangoo Couleur appears to be a base-trim model, thanks to its unpainted plastic bumpers and black steel wheels—features typically associated with budget-friendly specifications. However, the inclusion of LED headlights and optional roof racks signals a more adventurous, premium-oriented approach.
The Standout Colors and Design
The latest production run introduces the striking Vert Foret (green) shade, inspired by the lush hues of French forests in early summer. For those seeking additional options, the longer Grand Kangoo Couleur is available in Vert Paris (dark green) and Jaune La Poste (yellow), evoking the iconic French postal service.
Enhanced Off-Road Capability
While the Japanese-spec Kangoo remains front-wheel drive, Renault has equipped it with features to improve versatility. The 16-inch black steel wheels are fitted with Michelin CrossClimate all-season tires, and the “Extended Grip” switch on the center console enhances traction on slippery surfaces.
Dimensions and Practicality
The standard Kangoo measures 4,490 mm (176.8 in) in length and offers a five-seater configuration. The Grand Kangoo stretches to 4,910 mm (193.3 in), providing space for seven seats or a massive cargo area of up to 3,750 liters (132.4 cubic feet) when seats are removed. Japanese models feature rear barn doors instead of a tailgate, optimizing loading and unloading in tight urban environments.
Powertrain Options
Japanese buyers can choose between two powertrains:
- A 1.3-liter turbocharged gasoline engine producing 129 hp (96 kW / 131 PS), paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
- A 1.5-liter turbodiesel engine generating 114 hp (85 kW / 116 PS), exclusively available with a six-speed manual gearbox.
Power is sent to the front wheels, as the Kangoo’s second and third generations never offered a 4WD option.
Limited Availability and Lottery System
Production of the Renault Kangoo Couleur is capped at 100 units, with 40 gasoline models and 60 manual diesel variants. Both versions are priced at ¥4,390,000 ($27,600), which is ¥200,000 ($1,300) higher than the base Kangoo in Japan. Purchases are not guaranteed; instead, buyers will be selected through a lottery system.
The Grand Kangoo Couleur will follow in the next month, also subject to a lottery application. Production for the long-wheelbase seven-seater version is similarly limited to 100 units.
