Rivian’s R2 Platform to Expand with R2X and Pickup Variant

Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe has confirmed that the R2 platform will spawn additional variants, including an R2X and potentially a pickup truck. Speaking to Reuters, Scaringe teased unreleased models, stating,

"There are other variants of R2, which we haven’t shown."

R2X and Future Models: What’s Next for Rivian?

During a recent discussion, Scaringe addressed speculation about a pickup version of the R2, saying,

"So clearly there could be an R2X. There’s going to be combinations. I want to be careful not to announce the program."
This confirms industry expectations that the R2 platform will underpin multiple vehicles, enhancing Rivian’s economies of scale.

The original R2 reveal introduced the R3, a compact crossover, and the R3X, a performance-oriented variant. However, the R2’s potential variants—such as an R2T truck—were notably absent from the presentation, leaving room for future announcements.

R2 as Rivian’s Key to Market Expansion

The R2 is pivotal for Rivian’s growth, bridging the gap between its premium R1T and R1S models and more affordable electric vehicles (EVs). Current R1 models exceed mainstream budgets, but the R2 aims to change that with a starting price of around $58,000 and cheaper trims planned for the future.

Scaringe highlighted Rivian’s Georgia plant as a critical enabler for these variations. The brand’s most ambitious target is a $45,000 configuration expected in late 2027, offering over 275 miles (443 km) of range. Achieving this price point could significantly broaden Rivian’s customer base.

Challenges and Competition in the EV Market

The R2 isn’t just another model—it’s Rivian’s strategy to transition from a niche startup to a mainstream automaker. The U.S. EV market has slowed due to high interest rates and reduced federal incentives, while competitors like Tesla, Hyundai, and traditional automakers (including BMW) are introducing cheaper electric crossovers. The R2 must deliver on price, capability, and design to compete effectively.

Rivian’s R3 Gets a Retro Makeover with R3X

In a separate development, Rivian unveiled the R3X, a performance-focused variant of its entry-level R3 compact crossover. Inspired by 1980s automotive icons, the R3X adds a sporty edge to Rivian’s most affordable lineup, further diversifying its offerings.
