Rivian is nearing the launch of its much-anticipated R2 electric SUV, a midsize vehicle designed to compete with rivals like the BMW iX3. Following the success of its R1T pickup truck, R1S three-row SUV, and Amazon delivery vans, Rivian is expanding its lineup with a more affordable and compact option.
The company plans to introduce the R2 next year, with a base model priced at $45,000. However, Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe revealed in an interview with Reuters that the R2 lineup will include additional variants, including a potential R2X.
"So clearly there could be an R2X," Scaringe told Reuters. "There's going to be combinations... I want to be careful not to announce the program."
Scaringe also discussed Rivian's plans to develop its own lidar sensors in collaboration with a Chinese company, signaling further innovation in autonomous driving technology.
Production and Expansion Plans
The initial R2 models will be manufactured at Rivian's factory in Normal, Illinois. However, the R2 and an even smaller R3 (and R3X) will later be produced at Rivian's new factory in Georgia, which is expected to begin operations in 2028.
The Georgia plant is being funded in part by a $4.5 billion loan from the U.S. Department of Energy. Rivian will begin accessing these funds next year, supporting the expansion of its manufacturing capabilities.
