In November 2022, Sega announced its Super Game project, a Games as a Service (GaaS) initiative designed to deliver continuously updated online experiences aimed at attracting and retaining players while generating revenue. At the time, Sega hinted that the project might incorporate NFTs as part of its monetization strategy.
However, the highly anticipated March 2026 launch date has now passed, and Sega has officially confirmed the cancellation of the Super Game project. This update was included in the Sega Sammy Fiscal Year Ended March 2026 Results Presentation, published on the company’s official investor relations (IR) news section.
The cancellation was briefly mentioned in the “Review of the GaaS Strategy” report, which reviewed the progress of projects through the fiscal year ending March 2026. The report did not provide an explanation for the cancellation but noted that halting the project would result in no additional costs. It also highlighted several challenges within Sega’s portfolio, including underperforming titles such as Sonic Rumble Party and delays in some releases.
The report further revealed that Sega is shifting its focus, with approximately 100 free-to-play developers now working on full game development. Additionally, Rovio, the developer behind titles like Angry Birds, will undergo restructuring.
