Summer Box Office Kicks Off Strong with $174 Million Weekend

The summer box office is off to a robust start, with the first weekend totaling $174 million, marking a 19% increase compared to the same period last year. This surge is largely attributed to the strong debut of The Devil Wears Prada 2 and the impressive second-weekend performance of Michael.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 Leads with Record-Breaking Opening

The Devil Wears Prada 2 dominated the charts, earning $77 million domestically and a $233 million global opening. This performance outpaced last year's summer kickoff film, Marvel Studios' Thunderbolts*, which debuted with $74.3 million domestically and $160 million globally.

The sequel aims to surpass the inflation-adjusted theatrical run of the original The Devil Wears Prada, which grossed $326.5 million in 2006. To achieve this, the film needs to accumulate approximately $535 million in global grosses.

International Success: Italy Tops the Charts

Italy, a key filming location for The Devil Wears Prada 2, was the top international market, generating $16.6 million in its opening weekend. Other major international markets included:

  • Brazil: $12.6 million
  • United Kingdom: $12 million
  • Mexico: $11.7 million

Critical and Audience Reception

The Devil Wears Prada 2 has received positive feedback from both critics and audiences, earning:

  • CinemaScore: A-
  • Rotten Tomatoes: 77% critics score
  • Rotten Tomatoes: 87% audience score

The film's target audience reflects its predecessor, with 76% women and 58% over the age of 35.

Michael Maintains Momentum with Strong Second Weekend

Michael continued its strong performance, dropping just 44% from its $97 million opening weekend to earn $54 million in its second weekend. The film's international hold was even more impressive, with a 21% drop to $80 million across all markets.

This brings Michael's two-weekend total to $183.3 million domestically and $424 million worldwide.

Upcoming Releases Set to Shake Up the Box Office

The summer box office slate is far from over, with several highly anticipated releases on the horizon, including:

  • Amazon MGM’s family-friendly The Sheep Detectives
  • Warner Bros./New Line’s male-skewing Mortal Kombat II
  • The Star Wars film The Mandalorian & Grogu

These films are expected to carve out their own niches in the competitive summer market.
